Early exploders were captivated by the sailing vessels of Polynesia, so different from any they had seen elsewhere in the world and capable of amazing feats of navigation.

[A famous picture of a Hawaiian war canoe] Antique engraving by C Grignion after J Webber from Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, …performed under the direction of Captains Cook, Clerke and Gore, in His Majesty’s ships the Resolution and Discovery, in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780. Published by G. Nicol and T. Cadell, London, 1785.  220 x 375 mm. Uncoloured, excellent condition. $A 1500.

The Island of Otahiete bearing SE distance 1 League.  Antique engraving by W Watts after W Hodges from A Voyage towards the South Pole, and round the World.  Performed in His Majesty’s ships the Resolution and Adventure, in the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. Written by James Cook, Commander of the Resolution, published by W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, London, 1777. Shows many different types of islander craft at Tahiti. 230 x 465 mm. Uncoloured, very good condition, left-hand margin binding-holes close to the margin. $A 300

MV 004s

MV 004 Things remarkable in the Mary-Anne Islands. Antique engraving showing trees, a fish-hook, a yellow-tailed tuna and an outrigger canoe from the Marianas islands. Plate no 351 from volume 1 of Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca or, A complete collection of Voyages and Travels, Vol.I., published by John Harris, and produced under the patronage of George II. It set out to describe “whatever has been observed Worthy of Notice in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.” 325 x 190 mm. Uncoloured, good condition, paper slightly browned, 40 mm repaired tear in the upper right-hand corner. $A 90.
