The age of the flapper – 1920s and 30s.
La Gazette du Bon Ton was a leading fashion and life-style magazine published in France from 1912 to 1925.The American edition was called La Gazette du Bon Genre. Both titles roughly translate as “Journal of Good Taste” or “Journal of Good Style.” It was expensive and deliberately focussed on the elite and refinement. The most striking feature of the magazine was the fashion plates. These were drawn by leading artists of the day, amongst whom the most famous are Georges Barbier, André Edouard Marty, Thayaht (Ernesto Michahelles ) and Georges Lepape but there were also many others, working in Art Deco and other styles and depicting the models in often lively poses or intriguing situations. Many of them have captions designed to entice the reader into imagining a story around the scene. They are engravings, hand-coloured by “pochoir” [stencil] in a distinctive square format, on high quality paper, each page about 245 x 285 mm. The fashions are by leading “haute couture” houses, including Charles Worth, Paul Poiret and the hat-maker Rodier. They include formal evening dresses, less formal “afternoon” and “walking” dresses as well as sports outfits and occasionally costumes for dressing-up or stage performers. Some people buy individual plates, others collect them – for instance, thematically ( e.g. hats, evening dresses, children’s clothes or sports outfits) or by artist or couturier [dressmaker], (e.g. concentrating on a favourite or seeing how many different ones you can find). All the prints offered here are in excellent condition, with any blemishes described.
