Birds by John Gould

Gould – Lithographs

John Gould FRS (14 September 1804 – 3 February 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist who produced a large number of books on different categories of birds, all illustrated with magnificent hand coloured lithographs that set new standards for bird illustration and are amongst the best ever.

He is famous in Australia for his The Birds of Australia but we offer here some plates of birds from other countries.

Probably the most gifted and skilful artist to work for Gould was Edward Lear (1812-1888) who is also famous for his nonsense verse. He drew some of the plates for Birds of Europe (1832–37). These are much sought after by collectors.

We also offer a few plates of parrots from The Birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan Islands (1875–88). These are much cheaper than the parrots from The Birds of Australia but very attractive.

Finally we offer some remarkable plates of parrots and other spectacular New Zealand birds. These come from The Birds of Australia; Supplement  (1851 – 69).

All of these are lithographs on high quality heavy paper and delicately hand coloured at the time of issue. They measure 540 x 270 mm (page dimensions) and are in excellent condition.
