18th Century Butterflies

In the last three decades of the 1700s, more or less contemporaneously with the American and French revolutions and the intellectual wave that these set off right across Europe and its American extensions, there was a surge of interest in natural history. Amongst its many manifestations were two particularly beautiful books with meticulous drawn butterflies, finely engraved and very delicately hand painted.

Copper plate engravings from De uitlandsche Kapellen voorkomende in de drie Waereld-Deelen Asia, Africa en America [The exotic butterflies occurring in the three parts of the world Asia, Africa and America] by Pieter Cramer, published in 33 instalments in Amsterdam, 1775-1782.  It was the first book on exotic Lepidoptera to use the then new system developed by Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) for naming and classifying animals. The fine engravings are life-sized and in delicate original hand colouring.  287 x 220 mm. Excellent condition. $A120

Copper plate engravings from Papillons d’Europe, peints d’après nature, [Butterflies of Europe, painted from nature] by Jacques Louis Florentin Ergamelle. Acclaimed as “one of the most beautiful works on butterflies ever produced. “  Published by P. M. Delaguette, Basan & Poignant, Paris, 1779-93.  196 x 260 mm. Very finely engraved, mostly by J J Juillet and in delicate original hand colour. Excellent condition.  $A 120 each.
